Walks and Talks

The MacKenzie's love and enthusiasm for their work, environment, local history, culture and genealogy has prompted them to offer their guests a number of walks and talks (free of charge). Mary has an MA degree in Scottish Cultural Studies and a wide knowledge of local history. You can book one of Mary's tours or talks when you arrive. They are listed below and last about an hour.

Walk and Talk - history: a guided walk introducing you to Strone, it's history and it's people. Mary will take you back in history to the clearances and provide you with a picture of what life must have been like for the crofters during the 18th and 19th centuries. The walk also leads to the site of a hut circle which shows that the area was occupied about 2000 years ago.

Walk and Talk - Crofting: a guided walk and talk about the working of a crofting community.

Talk - Researching Genealogy: have some of your relatives come from Newtonmore, or Laggan Parish or Kingussie Parish? Did they have surnames of Macpherson, Cattanach, Macdonald, Stewart, Cameron, Kennedy - families Mary's research and knowledge of genealogy may help you with your research.  She also has done some research in the neighbouring parishes of Kilmonivaig, Alvie, Rothiemurchus, Duthil and Abernethy, Cromdale and Grantown.
