OK so an apartment in
the middle of Chamonix is not on a croft. But many of the activities in
Chamonix will appeal to those of you who enjoy the Cairngorms. The town,
located at the foot of Mount Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps, is one
of the Meccas of Alpine mountaineering. It is possible to do almost any
outdoor pursuit you can imagine there. Clearly it is best known for summer
climbing and winter skiing, but there is also rafting, canyoning, walking,
swimming, hydrospeed, via ferrata and much else besides. There is a lot of
parapenting in Chamonix, and there can be few more spectacular places to
try this. Mountain biking is also becoming increasingly popular, with
several routes running up and down the valley, and downhill runs are also
developed in three of the skiing areas. These varied activities make
Chamonix an all year round resort. |

When to come?
Mid Dec-end April is
the ski season. Runs are from 3300m so good early and late skiing
March, April are the best months to do the Vallee Blanche off-piste ski
run
May is off peak season, not much open
June great for mountain-biking and walking, flowers are gorgeous. Cable
cars mainly not running
July-Aug main summer walking and climbing season.
Sept – great walking, biking and climbing, summer weather when autumnal in
the UK. Often more stable weather for high level routes.
20th Sept-Nov, off peak season, not much open. Still good
walking at low levels. |
